Everything about Corrie Woods' The Woman’s Field Guide to Exceptional Living: Practical Steps for Living a Big, Bold, Beautiful Life! invite you to slip it in a pocket and carry it around for a while: the title, the volume's slim size, and its message of courageously embracing your truest, most creative self...
I have begun reading her pages of wisdom and it has occurred to me that
this little guide has delightful, encouraging and pertinent messages
for everyone, but that her words might especially resonate for those of
us facing cancer. For example, on the back cover, two statements caught
my attention: "Get out of your head and into your life." and "Live
without regrets, energy-drainers, and nay-sayers." These are two
lessons I have been working on for some time...
... Corrie Woods, is an author, motivational speaker, retreat leader and self-care coach specializing in work with women. Her experience in these roles is what fuels her first book’s inspirational power and broad appeal. Whether you have walked an intentional journey of self-discovery for years or are just starting out The Woman’s Field Guide to Exceptional Living offers easily executed ideas for shifting out of old patterns and bad habits into a healthier, more joyful experience....
Corrie digs deep to reach your inner child and then shows her how to come out and play! I love the playful way that Corrie teaches us how to belief in ourselves. Women so often identify only as the roles we play, mother, daughter, teacher, healer, coach. mentor, we don’t allow ourselves just to be who we are inside at our core. Through The Women’s Field Guide, Corrie takes us on a journey to find our true self in a thought provoking and enjoyable way, even providing the navigational tools to make the journey easier.
Corrie any time you feel like coming out to play, you bring the mud and I’ll bring the bubbles and we can meet under the tree in the back yard!
So you have the blahs, your life is moving nowhere, or worse still you’re in a holding pattern where your daily routines are so meticulously planned there is no room for spontaneity or change. Well, North Carolina author Corrie Woods has produced a refreshing little tome for women that extols them to move beyond ordinary living into extraordinary living, simply by changing ingrained habits and repetitive thinking patterns....

Review by: Grace Tierney
Self-help books are one of those things in life that you either love or loathe. Some will devour each new publication of that type seeking fresh insight on improving their lives, while others will mock the very existence of that shelf in the bookstore. If you count yourself amongst the mockers, stop reading this review now.
Still with me? Good. Corrie Woods wants to guide you to an exceptional life, which sounds like fun to me. Looking inside the book and spotting a chapter entitled “Making Mud Pies” re-enforced that initial impression.
Unlike many self-help authors, Woods boasts an impressive pedigree of practical work experience as a life-coach, women’s retreat leader, change facilitator, and personality-analyst. Luckily she’s used that varied experience to create a short self-help book. Yes, you read that correctly. It is short, only 179 pages long, and blissfully free of long-winded case histories and ponderous introductions to basic concepts.
The clue is in the title, Field Guide. Just as a good field-guide to bird-watching, for example, has at most two pages for each bird with just enough information to enable you to identify the winged creature you spotted during your walk, this pared-down guide provides just enough detail to allow you to develop various aspects of an exceptional woman’s life. Chapters are concise, easy to read, well planned, and most of all inviting.
I’ve tried a few guides on this topic before but although most included practical exercises for readers, I never bothered doing them. Thankfully Corrie Woods’ enticing ideas shout out to be tried.
For example, when she wants the reader to expand the creativity in their lives she gives a selection of ways to achieve this which I suspect would tempt almost any woman;
“You choose…
A handful of words can make a poem
A doodle on the edge of a scrap of paper can make a drawing
A twirl in the sunlight can make a dance
A hum while you fold clothes can be music…
You choose”
With the plethora of self-help books it is hard to find any genuinely new wisdom, and this book falls into that trap, yet sometimes the wisdom is in how the teaching is delivered. How many times have you read that women need to learn how to say “No”? Woods merely points out that “saying Yes to someone else means saying No to yourself.” Clever, eh?
Each of the 15 chapters gives a brief, and often amusing, description of how it seeks to aid you in your quest for an exceptional life – learning to love yourself, how to step into the spotlight, how to do a self-retreat, dealing with change, learning from your past, etc. Then Corrie provides easy practical suggestions to inspire you to make that improvement in your life and the chapter concludes with two text-free illustrated pages for you to record your triumphs with this challenge.
The elegant grey pointillist style illustrations by Caren Frost Olmsted lend a meditative look to this beautifully produced book, which thanks to its brevity, really would fit in your pocket for a field trip.
So, if the thought of ploughing through yet another self-help tome overweighed with quotations, long-winded stories, and no practical help drags you down, this is the book for you. It’s short, upbeat, easy to use, and most of all, will make you want to use it to enhance your life.

The author, Corrie Woods has magically produced a practical guide, with step by step suggestions on how to achieve the kind of life you truly deserve. At the end of each chapter, she provides pages for you to journal your thoughts and then your newly inspired plan of action. You can read through it quickly but most readers will benefit by going back and taking the time to allow each chapter to become a guideline to exceptional living.
Corrie Woods has been blessed with the energy not only to have ‘worn many hats’
along the way but also with a delightful way of sharing her knowledge. She is a Woman’s Author, Motivational Speaker, Retreat Leader, Personal Life Coach and much more. She has been a homeschool mom, program evaluator for children of low-income families and as well has experience in an upper management position of a multi million dollar corporation. With her wealth of experience, she challenges women to restructure negativity into positive living, ultimately enhancing your life.
I would very highly recommend this book. Reviewer: Cheryl Ellis, Allbooks Review

BellaOnline.com:
This book came into my life at my moment of greatest need. So
I flipped through it and thought “can this little book really do all of
this?” And that was a very valid question, as I’ve tons of books on my
bookshelves that are designed to guide readers into lives of
exceptional living.
But from the moment I opened this delicious little book, I could feel the energy shifting around me.
The
Woman’s Field Guide to Exceptional Living (hereafter referred to as
“WFG”) is truly a guidebook that is every bit as valuable to
exceptional living as a map would be to a world traveler.
The
book is 179 pages long, and the first time I read it, I read it easily
in two days (and that was over a weekend with family coming and going).
The
second time I went through the WFG I took it a section at a time and
gave myself a couple of weeks. The changes that happened were
remarkable. I found myself feeling more comfortable with who I am,
feeling more inspired and creative, enjoying the life that I have more
and having more compassion for others.
What I really loved about
the WFG is that it’s designed to bring about change in a simple manner.
You don’t have to do anything big or scary! For example, the first
section is titled “A BOLD Woman – a Brilliant, Outrageous, Luminary
Diva.” This particular section is a call to step out of our comfort
zone, and do something a bit bold.
”It is ever so easy to find
yourself in early retirement from your life. Your days become routine,
the same thoughts recycle over and over, and your actions are executed
within the narrow groove of what’s familiar.” From the book.
How
often can we say this statement has been true in our own lives? Corrie
asks us to remember a time when we did take a bold step, a stretch, and
to remember how good that felt. She then reminds us that it takes
action to move into bold living. And to take that first step, she
simply asks us to do something out of the ordinary. It could be as
simple as inviting a friend to lunch at a new restaurant, or wearing a
color you’ve never dared to wear before. For me, my first bold step was
to create a myspace page that features my original music.
The WFG is divided into three parts:
Setting Your Inner Compass for Yes
- A BOLD Woman
- Make your Life a Celebration
- The Gifts of Gratitude
- Stand in the Spotlight
- Self-Courtship – Love Thyself
Trailblazing the Experience
- Crafting a Personal Retreat
- Come to Your Senses
- Beloved Treasure – Your Body
- Making Mud Pies
- Invite Others Over to Play
Navigational Tools for Your Journey
- A Change-Savvy Woman
- Become a Master Gardener
- Lessons from Your Past
- Stepping Back into the Flow
- Touchstone Living
Every section includes steps you can take to move you forward into that life of extraordinary living.
“To
live authentically means that you truly hold nothing back. You believe
in who you are and the gifts you have to share.” From the book.
The WFG guides us to live the lives we dream of living, so at the end of all things we can say we lived a life with no regrets.
Too
many of us believe that we have to first get into the great
relationship, get the great job or loose that weight before we can
begin living extraordinary lives. But the WFG shows us that exceptional
living starts right now, from where we are!
Inspiration at BellaOnline
Ms. Corrie Woods is a Professional Life Coach, Speaker and Women's Retreat Leader. She has filled this book with thought provoking ideas on how to live an authentic life. Brilliant, Outrageous, Luminary Diva or BOLD for short; this stands for women who dare to be present in the moment every moment of their lives and Ms Woods gives you steps on achieving the life you want. She encourages you to step-out of your comfort zone and take a risk at what life has in store for those who dare to dream, to push the envelope and to finally find your true self.
Ms. Woods chronicles the
possible reasons why we as women choose to stay in our respective ruts,
doing the same ole, same ole. In addition, she gives suggestions on
stepping beyond those boundaries that we often enslave ourselves with.
Fear of the unknown often encourages a stuck mentality which fosters
stagnation. She gives you tips on changing the way you look at your
problems.
This author talks about expressing gratitude, the
power of positive thinking and being true to yourself as you discover
the real you behind the mask of expectation, the expectations that
others expect you to live by. The standards by which you are expected
to live up to no matter the cost to yourself. She encourages you to
explore the infinite possibilities that await you outside of your box,
to experience the infinite joy that is possible when you live a life
with no regrets. She gives you precise questions at the end of each
chapter that urges you to
contemplate what thoughts are provoked by the chapter, hopefully fostering a new outlook.
Ms.
Woods has written a thought provoking book that will have you
reexamining your life and how to improve it. Her book is a breath of
fresh air that has this reviewer thinking about the way I go about
living my life. Many readers will question their own lives and
hopefully adopt a new way to live life more authentically. The subject
is
timely and worth exploring as more women, work outside the home, in a
"Man's World". I would recommend this book to all women who want a
richer, fuller life.

Review by award-winning poet, and the copy editor and book reviewer for Pepper Tree Press Publishing, Susan Haley.
“Retreat is both an experience and a state of mind.” I approached my review of this book with an unconscious attitude of backing off. I was mentally retreating from what I thought was going to be just one more, of already thousands, self-help Spiritual philosophies. I’d already spent many years crafting such a philosophy to feed my own searching mind and was thinking overkill. I was wrong. In my initial thumbing through to get into a proper mindset for a fair review, the opening sentence above, jumped out at me. It was a message that my attitude was of a negative nature, and my mind immediately opened up to learning the author’s experiences.
“The Woman’s Guide to Exceptional Living” is a compact little book that fits easily into handbag or purse. Each little chapter begins with a quieting proverb of sorts; thought food, I call them. The content doesn’t teach as much as it provokes one’s own thinking. It has the ‘show me, don’t tell me’ element of fiction. It doesn’t tell a woman how to deal with life in each moment, but more, to celebrate it. It carries the familiar tenets of taking a little time for self-nurturing each day to a full blown self-celebration! Corrie Woods’s energy for life and creativity fairly leaps off the page in concise and powerful suggestions, and the end of each chapter provides blank pages for notes and your own impulsive and creative thoughts.
I found this little book to be profound in its simplicity. It takes what many spend a lifetime studying and attempting to assimilate into a method of application that a child could grasp. It could also serve as a guide to raising young daughters. Young sons, too, for that matter.
