Lyme Disease Support

A diagnosis of Lyme Disease can be both devastating and liberating. Devastating in that it is a very serious disease that is challenging, at best, to treat. Liberating, in that finally one knows what is causing all the chaos, pain and illness.

My diagnosis came in January 2009, though how long I have been infected remains a mystery. I am grateful to have this knowledge, as countless people suffer without ever knowing they have Lymes. Too, I am grateful that I am currently in good health. There have been plenty of ups and downs.


I share this very personal side of my life in hopes that it helps to spread awareness of this little known disease that impacts so many. If you want to learn more simply do a web search for Lyme Disease and you'll find many national and international organizations and foundations providing a wealth of information. What I am providing is just a sampling of information and links. There is tremendous controversy about what Chronic Lyme Disease is, how to diagnosis it, how to treat it and how to live with it, and though I may not agree 100% with each source noted below, for those who want to learn more it's a place to start.

Some Statistics:

  • Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector borne illness in the United States. (CDC)
  • During 1992--2006, the number of reported cases more than doubled. (CDC)
  • Incidence (annual) of Lyme disease: estimated 100,000 cases annually (NIAID/USA)
  • 377,675 cases of Lyme disease have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control, 1980 - 2009 (11/14/09). There have been 26,350 cases of Lyme Disease Reported to the Centers for Disease Control for the year 2009 (11/14/09). Remember it is conservatively estimated that only one in 10 cases of Lyme disease is actually reported to the CDC - so there may have been at least as many as 3.78 million cases of Lyme disease since 1980 and 263,500 cases in 2009.
